Target Flint Rifle
Based along the lines of an English sporting rifle, this gun was created in my search for the perfect target rifle. I wanted good balance, speed of ignition, and a comfortable fit. It should be nicely appointed, but not overly fancy. Maybe ‘understated elegance’ would be what I was after with this design.

The stock is of American Black Walnut, checkered at the wrist, and oil finished to a high sheen. The lock is an L&R “John Bailes," which is a small, fast, dependable lock, designed at the zenith of English flintlock development. The gun has a single trigger, tuned to a crisp let-off.

The nose cap is my own design, cast of German Silver. Sideplate is cut from sheet German Silver, then engraved.

The barrel is made by Green Mountain Barrel Co., 32” long, 1” octagon, .45 cal, turned for a brass muzzle protector. The protector allows you to load and clean the rifle without endangering the rifing at the muzzle.

The gun has a patent breech with a “White Lightnin” liner made by Jim Chambers. The tang and breech are relief chiseled with Oak and Acorns, and the background stippled with a punch.

The rear sight has one flip up leaf for 100 yard shooting. I made this with an acorn finial to match the triggerguard finial and breech detailing.
